According to the statistics published by the site ‘Girls Not Brides’: every year 15 million girls are married before they reach the age of 18.
That’s 28 girls every minute – one minor getting married every two seconds.
Those statistics speak of a chilling and disturbing truth which remains on-going to this day and age. It’s awful to think that little girls around
the world are forced to marry older men – thus robbing them the basic human right to play and get an education.
Many of these girls are married off to adult males often 3 or 4 times their age, in predominantly traditional Islamic countries.
A mature woman should be allowed to make the choice to wed the person she loves, at the appropriate age.
Letting these ‘husbands’ get away with marrying children, robs these kids of the essential lessons they need to develop in order survive in the
world. Girls need time and care in order to mature into wives and eventually mothers.
What kind of a mother would an 8-year-old make?
At the very least, these girls become disempowered and dependent on their older spouses.
At the worst, the children won’t even make it to age 18.
Here’s a story shared by Viral 4 Real, about an 8-year-old bride from Yemen who had died after suffering internal injuries because of sexual trauma
she endured on her wedding night.
Reportedly her 40-year-old husband had forced himself on her.
According to sources, the incident had reportedly occurred in the tribal area of Hardh, Northwestern Yemen – an area that borders Saudi Arabia. This
issue is only one of many instances of forced child marriages in the Middle East.
As a result, human rights organizations are calling for justice on behalf of the poor 8-year-old girl most likely forced into the marriage.
While this story isn’t a reflection of the historical culture of Islamic countries, such outrageous practices have no place in a modern society.
