More good news for Overseas Filipino Workers: starting March 2017, they will be exempted from the airport terminal fees according to the Department of Transportation. Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Ed Monreal happily announced last Monday, that major airlines have agreed to have fees waved from return tickets purchased abroad.
“Airline[s] have already agreed in principle, so, hopefully by March 2017, mawala na ang pangamba ng ating mga OFWs sa pagbabayad ng terminal fee [the fears of our OFWs over paying terminal fees will be lessened],”
Terminal fees cost around P550. Currently, they are included in the airline tickets costs, so OFW would have to refund the amount from MIAA counters inside the airport. However, MMIA wishes to resolve this inconvenience as soon as possible. The system will be starting in March 2017 so airlines will have ample time to adapt the policy.
Meanwhile, DOTR and MIIA are yet to seal the agreement by the signing of a memorandum of understanding.
