The terrorist group Abu Sayyaf has claimed the life of another hostage, this time a German national who has been held for three months after the demands for a ransom were not met.
According to Al-Jazeera, a video was reposted by a monitoring group SITE. It showed an elderly man lying on the grass while man holds a knife to his neck.
The man’s last words were “Now they’ll kill me.”
The hostage’s name is Jurgen Gustav Kantner. According to Colonel Edgard Arevalo, “We have sought the help of local governments and the Moro National Liberation Front in looking for the body of the latest victim of the Abu Sayyaf.”
Last Saturday, the military launched an operation in Sulu.
“We will not be cowed by the demands of evil individuals and groups who continue to perpetuate practices contrary to Islam,” the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said in a statement they issued.
It continued, ” “We put a premium on lives now in danger. The Armed Forces will pursue the enemy and dictate the terms, not the other way around. The operations are not only aimed at rescuing hostages but also to significantly degrade enemy capabilities,” AFP spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said.
The German national was taken captive from his yacht while he was in Mindanao. His 59-year-old wife was shot dead by the terrorist group.
However, the military failed to find the body of the hostage. They cannot officially confirm that he is dead without the remains.
