Seems like the administration is set to face more controversies as the death penalty gets a higher chance of being revived. A subpanel approved the proposal and it will then undergo deliberation in The House of Representatives’ justice committee.
According to reports, 6 congressmen voted for the revised proposal with a substitute punishment for crimes which are considered heinous such as illegal drugs, murder, rape, arson, and kidnapping.
Another 5 voted to a have a version of the proposal citing direct death penalty for drug-related crimes alone.
If the mother committee would approve as well, it would be bought to the plenary for debates. According to House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, this is one of the House priority measures.
The Death Penalty was banned at the year 2006 under Arroyo’s admin when she signed Republic Act 9340. It was then downgraded to reclusion perpetua or life imprisonment.
“In other words, the message of the House leadership is: ‘have a deadly Christmas,’” said Edsel Lagman, one of the lawmakers who voted for its abolishment.
