LOOK! The Philippine Flag Was Raised Underneath the Waters of Philippine Rise on Independence Day!

The Philippines has a long-standing territorial dispute with China over Benham Rise, which is the undersea region that is approximately 250 kilometers east of the northern coastline of the Isabela province. Last May 22, President Rodrigo Duterte named it “Philippine Rise” as a way to formally assert the country’s sovereign rights over the underwater region.
Interaksyon reported that on June 12, Monday, the Philippine flag was raised on the seabed of Philippine Rise. It was an underwater flag raising ceremony that happened during the country’s 119th Independence Day. According to the source, nine divers were commissioned to do the act.

The divers were ordered to raise the fiberless flag 57 meters below the Philippine Navy’s warship, BRP Davao del Sur.
NOLCOM (The Northern Luzon Command) chief Lieutenant General Romeo Tanalgo noted that the first underwater flag raising activity was part of their operations in territorial defense. He clarified that it did not mean Chinese ships were prowling the area.

He said in an interview: “With or without any foreign ship passing through Benham Rise, we really have to stake our claim here in Philippine Rise.”

It was written on the Executive Order No. 25 that the underwater region within the exclusive economic zone was to be called “Philippine Rise” from now on. It was recognized by the United Nations as well.

Abante Tonite reported that the Philippine Army and the Department of National Defense attended the ceremony. The spokesperson of NOLCOM, Lieutenant Colonel Isagani Nato, said that the divers were from the Philippine Navy, the Philippine Coast Guard, and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

He said that some foreign divers also participated in the event as volunteers to help raise the Philippine flag underneath.

Since April, Duterte has been proposing to rename the region after reports indicated that ships from China have been spotted in the area even though it’s strictly under Philippines’ economic zone.
ABS-CBN News revealed that United Nations has recognized the Philippines’ right towards the region since 2012 when the province of Isabela successfully defended it as part of their territory.
