Never Drink Coffee On An Empty Stomach Or This Will Happen To You!

Morning coffee is an essential part of any Filipino’s day. This magical black and bitter drink has given many hard-working Filipinos the energy they need to effectively work through the daily grind.

Whether it’s taken in the morning or as a little pick-me-up during the afternoon, coffee grants us a boost whenever we need it most.

For many of us, our day wouldn’t be complete without that hot cup – sugar and milk optional.

However, researchers have suggested that drinking coffee in the morning may cause serious health issues – especially when you drink it on an empty stomach.

Here are some of the reasons why you shouldn’t drink coffee without any food in your stomach.

1) Stomach Acid
Hydrochloric acid is released by the stomach which helps digest food.
Apparently, a cup of coffee is acidic and when you drink a cup it only adds to the acid already present in your stomach.

Without food, all this acid has nothing to do except eat away at your digestive tract which is very problematic. This is a major cause of abdominal discomfort and health issues like acid reflux, heartburn, stomach ulcers, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

2) Anxiety
Breakfast is the most important of the day, especially in the morning. Without food in your stomach, then your brain has a difficult time processing serotonin. Serotonin is the hormone in charge of calm and happiness.

Worst still, drinking coffee on an empty stomach could cause your brain to produce more cortisol (the stress hormone) and adrenaline in the blood. This is a cause for anxiety and depression.

3) Dehydration
According to Dr. Adam Simon of PushDoctor.co.uk, drinking coffee on an empty stomach increases the volume of fluid your body passes – thus dehydrating your body.

Ironically quenching your thirst with coffee may actually make your body thirstier.

4) Loss of Appetite
As it turns out, drinking coffee has the effect of removing your appetite altogether. This is one reason why coffee is effective in weight loss. However being constantly without an appetite is dangerous. Eating breakfast is still very important.

Researchers say the best time to drink coffee is between 10AM and 12 PM – just between breakfast and lunch.

Remember, coffee is great just don’t drink it on an empty stomach!
