Parliament winter session Day 1: House proceedings begin, adjourn, resume, and adjourn again | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: The winter session of Parliament got underway on Monday but both houses faced early adjournments after opposition demanded discussions on various issues.
Before the proceedings of both Houses began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his customary address, came down heavily on the opposition as he accused them of trying to control Parliament by resorting to hooliganism.
Here are the highlights from Day 1 of the winter session:
‘Those rejected by people resorting to hooliganism’: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the opposition, accusing them of trying to disrupt Parliament for political purposes even after being rejected by the public multiple times. Speaking to the media ahead of the start of Parliament’s proceedings, Modi said the opposition’s primary goal appeared to be obstructing the functioning of Parliament rather than contributing to its progress.
Taking a swipe at the opposition alliance, Modi stated, “Unfortunately, some people, who have been rejected by the public, are constantly trying to control the Parliament for their own political interests through the hooliganism of the people. The public counts all their activities and punishes them when the time comes.”
“The most important thing is that the new members of parliament who come with new ideas and energy are usurped by some people. They do not even get the opportunity to speak in the Parliament. In the democratic tradition, the job of every member is to prepare the next members, but those who have been rejected by the people 80-90 times, do not allow any discussion in the Parliament, do not respect the sentiments of democracy, do not understand the importance of people’s expectations,” PM Modi further said.
INDIA bloc meets to discuss strategy for Parliament session
Leaders of the INDIA bloc gathered at the office of Congress MP and Rajya Sabha Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge to plan a unified strategy for Parliament. The opposition is expected to highlight the alleged bribery and fraud case involving the Adani group and push for a discussion on the violence in Manipur.
Commenting on the meeting, Congress MP Manickam Tagore stated that a strategy to address these issues would be developed.
INDIA bloc demands discussion on Adani
INDIA bloc floor leaders called for a “detailed discussion” in Parliament on the allegations of bribery and fraud against the Adani group.
In a post on X, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said, “We do not need monopolies and cartels to run this country. We need healthy market-driven competition in the private sector, which facilitates equal opportunities, employment, and equitable distribution of wealth, catering to the inherent entrepreneurial spirit of India.”
He added, “The first step the government should take is to have a detailed discussion on the Adani saga, which has the potential of tarnishing India’s image at the global stage.” Kharge also said that the investments of millions of retail investors are at risk.
Opposition seeks extension in tenure of JPC on Waqf Bill
Opposition party members of the Joint Committee on the Waqf Amendment Bill met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to file a complaint against the panel chairman, Jagadambika Pal. They accused him of rushing the proceedings on the important legislation.
In a memorandum to the Speaker, the opposition members requested an extension of the committee’s tenure by a “reasonable time” to allow thorough deliberation on the comprehensive bill.
DMK MP A Raja, speaking to reporters after the meeting, said, “We submitted to the Speaker that the due processes are not followed by the chairman. He is hurrying up, bulldozing the proceedings.”
Both Houses adjourned
Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day following early disruptions.
In the Rajya Sabha, proceedings were initially halted as Opposition MPs demanded a discussion on bribery allegations against the Gautam Adani group.
The House was first adjourned until 11:45am and later for the entire day after the Opposition persisted with their demands.
The Rajya Sabha will reconvene on Wednesday, November 27.
In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla began the day with obituary references before adjourning proceedings until 12 noon. Shortly afterward, as opposition parties demanded discussions on various issues, the House was adjourned for the day and will meet again on Wednesday.
The Parliament will also be commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Constitution tomorrow, on November 26.
The house session concludes on December 20, having a total of 25 days since its commencement today.
