MoU signed to establish oceanarium and marine biological museum in Kollam
The Kerala State Coastal Development Corporation and Ernest & Young have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an oceanarium and a marine biological museum in Kollam.
At a meeting, chaired by Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal on Tuesday to discuss the project, it was decided that the future course of action will be based on the suggestions and feedback received from people’s representatives. This ambitious project, the first of its kind in Kerala, aims to promote marine science research, create awareness, and elevate Kerala’s status in international marine tourism. The ₹300-crore project will be implemented through a public-private partnership.
The State Budget had allocated $10 crore for the initial phase of the project aimed at promoting the rich biodiversity and maritime heritage of the State’s coastal areas.
The project is designed to focus on key areas such as conservation of marine biodiversity, promotion of scientific research, environmental protection, tourism development and preservation of cultural heritage. The Minister added that one of the main objectives of this project is to boost the State’s economy by promoting tourism. Fish pavilion, touch tanks, theme galleries, tunnel oceanarium, amphitheatre, souvenir shops, multimedia theatre, marine biological lab, display zone, and cafeteria will be part of the project.
At the meeting, a presentation was also made for the construction of ‘Kallumala Square’ near Cantonment Maidan in Kollam at a cost of ₹5 crore. This will be submitted to the government for administrative approval by the Coastal Development Corporation. A project presentation and initial discussion were also held for the renovation of the Kollam beach at a cost of ₹10 crore. Architects who renovated the Kozhikode beach presented the renovation possibilities of Kollam. Mr. Balagopal said that attractive facilities should be arranged without excessive new constructions. Discussions were also held regarding the construction of groynes.
MLAs, M. Noushad and M. Mukesh, Mayor Prasanna Ernest, deputy mayor Kollam Madhu, District Collector N. Devidas and officials from various departments were present.
