JD Vance firmly pledges his loyalty to Trump’s decision to not implement a federal ban on abortion.
Despite his previous position on the issue, Ohio Senator JD Vance, the running mate for Donald Trump, claimed on Sunday that he “absolutely” supported the former president not carrying out a federal abortion ban.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, numerous Republican-controlled states have implemented limits on abortion, with 21 of them outlawing or severely restricting the medical procedure at any point during pregnancy. Abortion is only one subject that has garnered major attention from voters during this time.
The Republican Party’s presidential nominee, Donald Trump, has stated that he believes abortion restrictions should be left to the states and has declined to support a federal abortion ban, ending months of speculation about his views on the matter before the 2024 election.
In a video uploaded to his Truth Social account in April, he stated, “My view is that now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote, legislation, or perhaps both.” “And whatever they decide must be the law of the land—in this case, the law of the state.”
During the campaign trail, Trump declared himself to be the “most pro-life president in American history” and mentioned selecting the justices of the Supreme Court who voted to overturn Roe.
Conversely, JD Vance has positioned himself as a staunch social conservative and close ally of the outgoing president since winning a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2022. However, Democrats have aggressively reacted against him since Trump chose him as his running mate in July because of his views on issues like abortion.
Though JD Vance had previously indicated that he would be in favor of a federal ban on medical practice, he has now taken Trump’s position and permitted state legislatures to pass their own legislation over the issue.
When JD Vance appeared for an interview on NBC News’ Meet the Press on Sunday morning, anchor Kristen Welker questioned him about if he could guarantee that Trump would not enact a federal ban on abortion if they were elected.
In response, Vance said, “I can definitely commit to that. Regarding that, Donald Trump has made every effort to be transparent. Donald Trump wishes to put an end to this specific topic’s culture war. In my opinion, Donald Trump is correct. These are important immigration and economic issues that we want the federal government to take seriously. Allow the states to determine their own abortion laws.”

In response to a question from Welker regarding opposition from other Republicans, “would Donald Trump veto such a piece of legislation if it landed on his desk?” Trump, according to Vance, “would be very clear and not support it.”
The senator said, “I believe he would,” in response to a more direct question about whether Trump would veto a nationwide abortion ban. He made it clear that he would.”
When Vance was questioned in a rediscovered interview with Spectrum News in 2021 about his views on abortion and whether a woman should be compelled to carry a fetus to term after she had been the victim of rape or incest, the criticism of his views on the matter intensified.
“In my opinion, two wrongs are insufficient for a right. Ultimately, what we are discussing is an unborn child. What sort of society are we aiming for? “Is it our desire to live in a society where unborn children are considered as burdens to be disposed of?” he said.
“The question is not whether a mother should be forced to carry a child to term; rather, it is whether a child should be permitted to live, even if the events around the child’s birth are difficult or pose a social issue,” Vance continued. To me, the true question is about the baby.”
In a debate with Fox News’s Sean Hannity last month, Vance proceeded to justify himself following the revelation of his association with Trump as his running mate.
Regarding the interview with Spectrum News, Vance responded to Hannity by saying, “The Democrats have completely twisted my words.” What I did say was that, on a few occasions, this society views newborns as an inconvenience. I firmly believe that this needs to change, and I want to see a greater pro-life movement.”
He continued to support Trump’s stance on abortion, calling it “reasonable” and meant “to let voters in those states make decisions.”
The Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, who will challenge Trump, has openly opposed the multiple state-level abortion laws that have been put into place in recent years and has continuously defended abortion rights. As vice president, she voiced her opposition to the Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and voted against a bill that would have prohibited abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy while she was a senator.
Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, Harris’ running mate, has been an outspoken supporter of reproductive rights and has worked to implement comprehensive legislation in his state. Following the Roe decision’s overturn, Minnesota was the first state to enact legislation safeguarding abortion rights. Since Minnesota allows abortions at any point during a pregnancy, people who live in states where the practice is prohibited often choose to have their abortions there.
