EU Parliament delegation visits Georgia to demand fair elections
Tbilis (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – MEPs visit Georgia to show solidarity, demand fair elections, and urge EU involvement for Georgia’s European future.
The visiting delegation of Members of the European Parliament to Georgia has held closed-door discussions with the President, and opposition coalitions on 12 Dec 2024. Visiting MEP Rasa Juknevičienė on 11 Dec 2024 outlined the objective of the delegation on X. She stated that the visit sought to “show solidarity with Georgians resisting for a European future”.

As reported by Civil Georgia, the visiting delegation of Members of the European Parliament has emphasized the demand for fair elections and more robust EU involvement. MEPs also urged for the reconduct of the recent elections, which they considered neither free nor fair, and reaffirmed their dedication to Georgia’s European future.
How does MEPs view Georgia’s election results?
According to INTERPRESSNEWS, MEP Michał Szczerba stated that Georgia was awarded European Union’s candidate status with specific conditions, of which one of the most important one was to conduct free and fair elections
“and it must be stated that these elections were neither free nor fair,”
he stressed.
“Therefore, we request the Georgian government to rerun these elections with certain conditions and according to the standards we respect in the European Union”,
stated the Polish MEP.
Moreover, MEP Rasa Juknevičienė remarked:
“We are here as a fact-finding assignment to see the circumstances on the ground, and of course, our gatherings are very significant for drawing the right conclusions.”
She also conveyed her thoughts that she wants the European Union “to work, to be louder and more supporting.”
She said,
“We are not here to endorse any particular political party, but we are here to sustain Georgia as a country that is currently at a very important and decisive point”.
