‘Have to make a decision’: Slater’s potential Maroons blow as veteran pair weigh up Origin future
Maroons coach Billy Slater could have to plan for life without two key stars, with both Ben Hunt and Daly Cherry-Evans reportedly considering stepping away from the Origin arena after the 2025 series.

That is according to Code Sports, who are reporting Hunt has revealed he’s unsure he will be putting his name forward for selection next season.
When asked if the 2025 Origin series could be his last, Hunt said: “I’m not too sure.
“At some stage I will have to make a decision on State of Origin.
“Right now I want to get into next year, have a fresh start at the Broncos and see how the start of the season is going and that will take care of Origin level.”
Meanwhile, Cherry-Evans has previously opened up on his representative future, and the gun halfback explained he doesn’t need a “fairytale finish” to call time on his Maroons career.
However, he also said: “For as long as I am good enough to hold a spot in this team, it will be very hard to pass up in the future.”
Both Hunt and Cherry-Evans reportedly understand that Origin commitments could have to make way to prolong their NRL careers.
Hunt, who turns 35 in March, signed a two-year deal with the Broncos, while Cherry-Evans, who turns 36 in February, has a contract until the end of 2025.
However, he’s currently weighing up a 12 month extension to remain in Brookvale for a further season.

Both Hunt and Cherry-Evans have been key figures for Queensland under Slater, with the former Dragons halfback winning his state’s best and fairest award twice.
He also scored a runaway try in the 2022 series decider at Suncorp Stadium that proved to be the matchwinning four-pointer.
Hunt has forged a two-pronged hooker attack with Harry Grant in recent years, meaning Slater could be forced to pick a new No.14 and a fresh No.7 in years to come.
