Sega revives Virtua Fighter, debuts new IP at the same show

Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios made an appearance at The Game Awards to show off two new titles: One a new title, and one older. The first trailer is for a new entry in the legendary fighting game franchise, Virtua Fighter, which Sega plans to discuss in more detail in an upcoming direct event. The second is for an entirely new IP — an historical action-adventure game currently called Project Century.

Justin Scarpone, Sega’s global head of transmedia, teased the existence of a new Virtua Fighter earlier this year in an interview with VGC. It’s one of many older franchises the company is reviving, including Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. At the time, all Scarpone said was that “another Virtua Fighter” was in development. The trailer gives a way little about the new game, not even at title, though it does show one fighter who appears to be franchise stalwart Sarah Bryant.

RGG Studios is best known for its Like a Dragon series (formerly called Yakuza), and they have made historical adventures before — Like a Dragon: Ishin! was set during the Bakumatsu period, for example. Project Century is set in 1915 Japan, and appears to be separate from any of the existing characters and stories in the series so far.
