Following the NSWRL’s reveal on Monday that Storm coach Craig Bellamy will step into the newly-created coaching adviser role for the Blues after a Daley SOS, Code Sports has reported that former State of Origin forward Dean Young will join Daley’s staff as an assistant.
Young, who is an assistant coach under Shane Flanagan at the Dragons, will join a NSW coaching staff which already includes Roosters assistant Matt King and Brett White, who were both part of the Blues’ 2024 success.
Young replaces John Cartwright on the Blues staff, who has relocated to England to coach Super League team Hull FC.
The former Dragons and Blues star retired in 2012, but started the coaching the following season when he was at the helm of the Illawarra Steelers SG Ball side.
He’s been an assistant at the Dragons and Cowboys since 2015 and is expected to get his chance to coach his own NRL team in the next couple of seasons.
“This is where you want to be – at the biggest games – and I feel very privileged to be working with the best and most elite players in the game,” Young said.
“The staff and players did an incredible job in beating Queensland in this year’s series and I’m looking forward to working with everyone involved in the upcoming series.
“I have worked with Laurie before and I know what he’s capable of and I’m grateful that he has asked me to come on board.
“It’s a great opportunity to work with the game’s elite players and I just want to play my part in making sure they are well prepared and have the opportunity to be at their best.”
